Fuel cells are electro chemical devices, which transform chemical
energy to electricity. They have very good efficiency, high energy density
and operate quietly and environmentally harmless. Their main disadvantage
at the moment is high cost and poor infrastructure for refueling. As a
fuel, fuel cells can use pure hydrogen or also liquid hydrocarbons,
which are transformed to hydrogen gas inside fuel cell or in a separate
reforming device. High cost is a consequence of development costs and also expensive
materials used in some cases.
Fuel Cells in Electric vehicles
Fuel cells will
be used in electric vehicles with high range requirements.
At the moment prototype fuel cells for electric vehicles are in in
the same power range as current internal combustine engines of our
cars. However it is possible to construct much more efficient electric
vehicles that do not require so much power. Especially using secondary
power sources like batteries or ultracapacitors, we can use fuel cell
at the power, where it is the most efficient.
